August Hermann Niemeyer

August Hermann Niemeyer (* September 1, 1754 in Halle ( Saale), † July 7, 1828 in Magdeburg ) was a German theologian, educator, librettist, poet, travel writer, Protestant hymn writer and Prussian education policy.

Life

August Hermann Niemeyer visited the Pädagogium in Halle and studied 1771-1777 at the local university theology. On April 18, 1777 he received his doctorate in theology.

Niemeyer began his professional career in 1777 as a lecturer in theology at the University of Halle, from 1784, he taught there as a professor. He later founded and led the Educational Department of the University and was eventually appointed to the Chancellor and Rector. In addition, Niemeyer was the director of the Francke Foundations.

In 1785 he was co-director of the Pedagogium and the orphanage in 1787 director of the Theological Seminary, 1792 consistory, 1804 Oberkonsistorialrat and member of the Berlin high school college. In 1807 he was sent as a hostage to France, but appointed a member of the States of the Kingdom of Westphalia, also the Chancellor and Rector perpetuus the University of Halle after his return in 1808. The Registrar office he retained under the Prussian government (1814 ), who in 1816 appointed him a member of the consistory of Magdeburg.

His grave is located on the Halle Stadtgottesacker.

Family

August Hermann Niemeyer was the great grandson of August Hermann Francke, the founder of the Francke Foundations. His father was Johann Konrad Philipp Niemeyer (1711-1767), preacher, deacon and archdeacon Adjunctus in Halle. The mother Auguste Sophie Freylinghausen (1717-1763) was the daughter of orphanage director Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen (1670-1739) and Johanne Sophie Anastasia Francke. He had a brother David Gottlieb Niemeyer, the pastor in Glaucha was.

August Hermann Niemeyer married on October 5, 1786 in Magdeburg Agnes Wilhelmina of Köpken (* February 15, 1769 ), the daughter of Friedrich von Magdeburg privy councilor Köpken. Among his children, the physician Wilhelm Hermann Niemeyer included (1788-1840) and Charles Edward Niemeyer (1792-1838), the jurist Franz Anton Niemeyer (1790-1867) and the theologian Hermann Agathon Niemeyer ( 1802-1851 ). The garden architect Paul Victor Niemeyer (1827-1901), the lawyer Herbert Pernice (1832-1875), the Moor researchers Moritz Fleischer (1843-1927) and the physicians Richard Fleischer (1848-1909) and Felix von Niemeyer were his grandchildren.

  • Friedrich Gotthelf Benjamin Schmieder (1779-1838) was a German Protestant studied theology and was a philologist, author, educationist and from 1804 until his death, Rector of the Royal High School in Brieg.
  • Johann Christian Cronenberg and Ivan Jakovlevic Kronenberg (1788-1838) was a Russian- Ukrainian classical scholar of German descent. He attended the Pädagogium in Halle (1800-1805) and was from 1819 to 1838 professor of classical philology at the Russian Imperial Kharkov University and Rector ( 1823-1829, 1833-1836 ) there, now Ukraine.
