August Malmström

Johan August Malmström ( born October 14, 1829 in the town of Motala in Östergötland, † October 18, 1901 in Stockholm) was a Swedish painter of symbolism and professor at the Royal College of Art in Stockholm.

Life

In addition to his paintings is Malmström devoted to a heightened extent illustrations. So he created in 1868 to drawings Esaias Tegnérs Fritjofs saga and 1888 fourteen oil paintings for a new edition of the seal. Appeared in 1880 Sagan om och hans Ragnar Lodbrok Söner of PA Goedecke, with illustrations by Malmström. Also Ensign steel of Runeberg were illustrated by Malmström. In Malmströms death were present 19 oil paintings and many drawings to Njal saga. Furthermore Malmström created drawings for the newspaper Ny Illustrerad Tidning and example to books by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Zacharias Topelius.

From 1887 to 1893 Malmström was director of the educational institution the Academy of Arts. In 1894 he resigned his professorship. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Swedish Society for History ( Fornminnesförening ) since the establishment of the entity in 1869.
