The August Schell Brewing Company is a brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota. It was founded in 1860 by German immigrant August Schell and Jacob Bernhardt and is since 1866 owned by the Schell family. The brewery is now the second oldest family-run brewery in the United States and by the acquisition of the best-selling Grain Belt brewery in Minnesota.

History

The brewery was founded in autumn 1860 by the born in Durbach August Schell, who had emigrated in the 1850s in the United States and settled in Minnesota and Jacob Bernhardt, who had previously worked in St. Paul as a master brewer, the Cottonwood River near New Ulm built. They had decided, as the procurement of beer was at that time in the rural areas of the Midwest, despite the existing demand difficult. In the early years, only about 235 hectoliters were brewed annually. While the Dakota uprising in 1862, the brewery remained spared from attacks by the Indians, as the family Schell always friendly Dakota behave towards and she has been provided with food. 1866 sold the diseased Bernhardt his shares in the brewery for $ 12,000 to Schell, the expanded the brewery to several buildings. 1885 Schell built next to the brewery extensive grounds ( "Schell Mansion" ), which was later added to the National Register of Historic Places. After the death of August Schell in September 1891, the brewery was run by his family. In 1902 she was converted into a Corporation. The growth of the brewery suffered a setback in 1919 by the Prohibition. During this time, beer-like beverages and soft drinks were produced. Only with the end of Prohibition in 1933 could be restored and sold beer. Although smaller breweries were often taken over since the 1980s or pushed by large corporations out of the competition, the Schell Brewery remained as a family exist. This development also influenced the image as a regional and quality-conscious company, which thus could compete on the market. In 1999, the old production building was replaced by a decaying building. The daily emissions rose to a maximum of around 657 hectoliters. The August Schell Brewing Company in 2002 took over the Grain Belt brand and thus rose to the highest turnover brewery Minnesota. The annual output is about 130,000 hectoliters.
