Augustine Harris

Thomas Augustine Harris ( born October 27, 1917 in West Derby, a suburb of Liverpool, England; † August 30, 2007 in Ince Blundell near Liverpool ) was from 1978 to 1992 Roman Catholic Bishop of Middlesbrough.

Life

Augustine Harris studied theology and philosophy at St. Joseph 's College, Upholland, Lancashire, and was ordained a priest on 30 May 1942 in Liverpool. He worked as a chaplain in the prison of Walton. He represented England in the International Council of Senior RC Prison Chaplains 1957-1966. He was a member of the Vatican delegation to the meetings of the United Nations Crime Congresses ( UNODC) in London (1960) and Stockholm ( 1965).

He was called by Pope Paul VI. 1965 appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool and was appointed Titular Bishop of Socia. He received his episcopal consecration on February 11, 1966 Archbishop Richard Downey. After the unexpected death of Archbishop George Andrew Beck him fell the task, the finished Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral to consecrate, the first Roman Catholic construction of a cathedral in England in the 20th century.

In 1978 he was appointed by John Paul II as Bishop of the Diocese of Middlesbrough, the new cathedral he consecrated in 1988. Harris was represented in numerous national committees and known as BBC pastor with worship transfers from Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

1992 his resignation was accepted by Pope John Paul II.
