Augustine Hornyak

Augustine Eugene Hornyak, OSBM, even Augustine Eugene Hornyak, Ukrainian: Августин Горняк, ( born October 7, 1919 in Kucura, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, † 16 November 2003 in London ) was a bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the first Apostolic Exarch of UK.

Life

Eugene Hornyak was the third of five children. He completed his primary education in his native Kucura. Already at an early age, Eugene was attracted to the priesthood, so his parents sent him to the bishopric Križevci. Here took over Bishop Dionisije Njaradi his care and training as a priest. 1940 Hornyak was sent to Rome and studied at the Pontifical Ukrainian College. On March 25, 1945, he was ordained in Rome by Bishop Ivan Bucko ( archeparchy Philadelphia ) to the priest. Hornyak continued his studies in Rome and graduated from with a graduate degree in theology and canon law.

Canada and USA

At the beginning of the Second World War, he went at the invitation of Bishop Daniel Ivancho to Pittsburgh and taught at the seminary of the Ruthenian step archeparchy Pittsburgh church law and dogma. In this function he carried out the post of choirmaster and clergy Director.

In 1956, Eugene Hornyak entered into Mundare (Alberta, Canada) his novitiate in the Order of the Basilian St. Jehoshaphat chose as monastic name Augustine. In 1957 he went back to the U.S. and put on June 19, 1960 his eternal religious profession. Thereafter, he was appointed spiritual director of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic seminary in the Eparchy of Stamford. It joined the task master of novices in Glen Cove.

Great Britain

With the appointment as Auxiliary Bishop in the Apostolic Exarchate England and Wales Father Augustine was appointed on 14 August 1961 Titular Bishop of Hermonthis. On 26 October 1961, the Archbishop of Philadelphia Ambrozij Andrew Senyshyn OSBM consecrated him bishop, but he was of the co-consecrators Bishop Isidore Borecky ( Apostolic Exarch of Eastern Canada ) and Bishop Joseph Michael Schmondiuk ( Stamford ) support. Pope John XXIII. appointed him on 12 May 1968 Apostolic Exarch of England and Wales (later Apostolic Exarchate of Great Britain).

During his tenure, he has participated in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council. He was Mitkonsekrator at Joakim Segedi titular bishop of Gypsaria, Michael Joseph Dudick bishop of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church of Passaic and Miroslav Stefan Marusyn Titular Bishop of Cadi. Since his retirement on September 29, 1987, he was emeritus Apostolic Exarch of Great Britain, and was succeeded by Michel Hrynchyshyn. Bishop Hornyak died on 16 November 2003 in London and was in his birthplace Kucura (now Serbia) buried.
