The Australian Terrier is a recognized by the FCI Australian dog breed (FCI Group 3, Section 2, Standard No. 8).

Origin and History

The Australian Terrier is a breed from the 19th century and probably comes from the Yorkshire Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the Cairn Terrier ( which it is most similar ), crossed with the native Sydney Silky. The first time he was in 1880 exhibited in Melbourne at a dog show. In 1906 he appeared for the first time in England, the breed began in 1921 after the establishment of the Australian Terrier Club, who set his breed standard.

Appearance

A sturdy low set dog (25 cm, 6.5 kg ), the body is long in relation to the shoulder height and powerfully built with a strong Terrier character; he has a harsh coat with clear Krause around the neck. The body hair is made of harsh, smooth, dense outer coat of approximately 6 cm in length and short undercoat of softer texture in the colors blue, steel blue or dark gray-blue (each with rich Loh ), sand-colored or red (not brown). The more intense and clearly delineated the color is, the better. The mop is blue, silver or has the color of head hair lighter shade, beige or red. The head is covered with a soft mop of hair, the ears are small, pointed and erect. Puppies are black at birth, the skin turns gradually. The characteristic " fur ruff " around the neck is only fully developed by the age of three years.

Character

The Australian Terrier is a rugged, alert, even swashbuckling, happy and affectionate dog. He is very intelligent and can be easily trained. Towards people he is good natured, although initially a bit cautious. He is straightforward with children and seldom quarrelsome towards other dogs.

Use

Originally, the Australian Terrier was bred in his home country specifically for rat and snake hunting. He had to be able to kill them very quickly. He is an alert, tough and hardy dog ​​.

Despite their relatively small size, these dogs are used in groups for herding sheep. Kept as a companion, he should get long walks to be its essence justice as a working dog. Due to its fast learning ability and activity, the Australian Terrier brings good to the dog sport.
