Austrian Archaeological Institute at Athens

The Austrian Archaeological Institute, Athens Branch (Greek Αυστριακό Αρχαιολογικό Ινστιτούτο Αθηνών ) is one of 17 foreign archaeological institutes in Greece, all of which have their head office in Athens.

History and tasks

The Athens Branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute was founded in 1898 as the fifth foreign archaeological institute in Athens. The 1908 building was completed, in which the branch Athens is housed, was built according to plans by Ernst Ziller and is located on a gift by the Greek state land in the Leoforos Alexandras. From 1947 to 2003, the building was also home to the Austrian Embassy. The Athens Branch was closed as a result of World War II in 1944 and in 1964 reopened.

The task of the Athens Branch is to support and conduct of research on classical archeology and archaeological research of Austrian scientists and students. In addition, scientific events are conducted on archaeological topics.

Facilities and research

The Library of the Athens Branch comprises about 16,000 volumes, the emphasis of the collection comprises publications on classical archeology in Greece and the Aegean Bronze Age, but also archaeological publications from Austria.

Current research projects are concerned with Aigeira, Lousoi and Aegina, where in cooperation with the Department of Ancient History, Classical Archaeology and Frühägäische the University of Salzburg. Furthermore, be carried out together with the Ephorie of Patras excavations in Gremoulias at Kalavrita. Administrative support from the Athens Branch is currently a collaboration of the University of Graz with the Ephorie of Corinth in Pheneos. The Athens Branch has a long tradition of research in Elis, where excavations in collaboration with the Archaeological Society took place at Athens. Earlier smaller excavations and surveys have been undertaken in Elateia, in eastern Crete, in Pleuron, in the Peloponnese and in Plataea.
