Autolycus of Pitane

Autolycus of Pitane (c. 360 BC in Pitane, Aeolian, † 290 BC) was a Greek astronomer and mathematician.

He appeared in the late 4th century BC and was said to be teachers of the Greek philosopher Arcesilaus. Of his works, two around the year 330 BC, wrote pamphlets are still preserved: "On the rotating ball " and "On the construction and destruction " that deal with the geometry of the sphere with astronomical aspects. These are the oldest extant works on mathematics and astronomy in Greek literature.
