Avadi (Tamil: ஆவடி Avati [a ː ʋəɖi ] ) is an industrial city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu with nearly 350,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is located in Tiruvallur district about 15 kilometers west of Chennai and belongs to the metropolitan region of Chennai. The name Avadi is an acronym for Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India.

Avadi is one of the most important locations of the state Indian defense industry. The Avadi Heavy Vehicles Factory ( HVF ) is the only production facility for tanks in India. On December 29 here in 1965 rolled out the first Indian armored type Vijayanta from the tape. Today, the main battle tank Arjun and heavy guns in Avadi be built. The Department of combat vehicles of the Indian defense research and development organization ( Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO ) has its seat in the city. In addition, the Indian Army operates a vehicle depot, the Air Force a training camp for vehicle technicians in Avadi.
