Avenida del Libertador

The Avenida del Libertador is one of the main thoroughfares of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It runs about 25 km from the Plaza San Martín in Retiro to the suburb of San Fernando.

History

Inspired by the modernization of Paris by the city planner Baron Haussmann, joined the mayor of Buenos Aires, Torcuato de Alvear, with similar plans in 1880 his post. At the time, Buenos Aires was a rapidly growing city with narrow streets in the checkerboard pattern. Torcuato de Alvear was planning a boulevard, the Retiro on the northeastern outskirts of the growing (then) suburbs of Recoleta and Palermo should connect the west of it. For this purpose, Bella Vista Road was widened and lengthened. At its dedication in 1885 she was named after the father of Torcuato de Alvear, Carlos María de Alvear, named.

The Avenida Alvear quickly became the most desirable address in Buenos Aires and it originated there numerous magnificent villas of which some still exist today. However, it was also fast becoming one of the busiest streets in Buenos Aires in the late 19th century.

Along with the planning of the railway station Estación Retiro Torcuato de Alvear developed successor in office, Adolfo Bull Rich, a multi-lane boulevard from Retiro to Palermo. This should be parallel to a railway line and east of Avenida Alvear, to enable the inhabitants of Palermo access to the station and to relieve the Avenida Alvear.

1906, the road was opened as the " Avenida Vértiz ", to commemorate the former Viceroy Juan José de Vértiz y Salcedo. In 1950, she was on the order of President Juan Perón renamed Avenida del Libertador, to commemorate the centenary of the death of General José de San Martín, the liberator (Spanish for " Libertador " ) of Argentina, Chile and Peru.

In the late 1930s, the 15 km long route 195 was built as an extension of Avenida del Libertador San Fernando, crossing the districts of Belgrano and Núñez and the suburbs Olivos and San Isidro. Due to regular traffic jams during rush hours was opened in 1996 the toll " Aturo - Illia expressway ", running parallel to the Avenida del Libertador.
