Avenir Aleksandrovich Yakovkin

Avenir Jakowkin Alexandrovich (Russian Авенир Александрович Яковкин; born May 21, 1887 in Blagoveshchensk ( Bashkortostan ), † 18 November 1974 in Kiev ) was a Russian astronomer.

He worked from 1910 to 1931 at the Engelhardt Observatory of the University of Kazan, in 1928 as its director. During this period he carried out an extensive measurement program, the result of which was the accurate determination of the orbital parameters of the Moon and in particular their impact on the libration.

From 1937 to 1945 he was Director of the Astronomical Institute of the Gorky University in Sverdlovsk. From 1945 to 1951 he worked at the University of Kiev and was there from 1949 Dean of the Faculty of Physics. From 1951 to 1968 he worked at the Main Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences in Kiev, 1952-1959 as its director, then as a scientific advisor.

He was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

The lunar crater Yakovkin is named after him.
