Avery Island, Louisiana

The island Avery Iceland is a salt dome in Iberia Parish ( Def: Parish ) near the town of New Iberia, Louisiana in the United States. It is located about five kilometers inland from Vermilion Bay, which opens to the direction of the Gulf of Mexico. Avery Iceland is located about 225 kilometers west of New Orleans.

At its highest point, the island reached about 49 meters above the sea level. It covers an area of about 9 km ² and is about four miles wide at the widest point. Avery Iceland is surrounded on all sides by bayous, salt marsh and swampland.

The island was formerly known as " Petite Anse Island". ( " Petite Anse " means " Cove " in the local Cajun dialect. )

Formation

The island was created by the buoyancy of old deposits of evaporites (salt) that exist among the Mississippi Delta region. These boosts are called salt dome. Avery Iceland is one of five salt dome islands that rise above the flat Gulf Coast of Louisiana.

Economy

  • Avery Iceland is known around the world, since there the Tabasco sauce is made.
  • Until 1863 the there occurring salt was obtained as a food.
  • Access to the island requires a toll of one dollar, which must be paid upon entering the island. However, as only access to the company allowed the rest of the island is not accessible.
  • The Jungle Garden will cost another $ 8 per person (2011)

  • On the island there are also the " Jungle Gardens ", a famous bird sanctuary, where every spring thousands of snow-white herons and other migratory water birds build their nests.
  • Avery Iceland also inspired Jeff Mangum of the band Neutral Milk Hotel for their first album, "On Avery Iceland ", published in 1996.
