Aylesford

Aylesford is a village with 4548 inhabitants ( 2001) and a community ( civil parish ) in the southern English county of Kent. It lies on the right bank of the Medway, approximately 6 miles northwest of Maidstone.

History

1242 founded the returning Crusaders Ralph Term Burn under the patronage of Richard de Grey in Aylesford the first Carmelite monastery outside of the Holy Land in Europe. Here the hermit Simon Stock was in 1245 elected Prior General of the Order.

From 1890 to the archaeologist Sir Arthur J. Evans dug in Aylesford from an Iron Age burial ground dating from the 1st century BC. After the eponymous locality was a type of vessel, the Aylesford - pan named.

Attractions

Center of the town is the late Gothic Peter and Paul Church. The restored 1878 house of God has a distinct Norman influence and contains the tomb of the court Culpeper family.
