Aztekium ritteri is a species of the genus Aztekium in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet honors the German ritteri cactus specialists Friedrich Ritter.

Description

Aztekium ritteri grows initially individually with olive-green, almost spherical to spherical bodies, which later sprouted and form groups. You can reach heights of growth 1-3 centimeters in diameter and 2-6 centimeters. 6 to 11 to the rounded edges have ribs on their edges numerous wrinkles. The ribs are 5-9 mm tall and 3 to 10 mm wide. The often short-lived one to two spines are often bent or twisted.

The white flowers have a more or less rose -colored central strip and reach diameter of 7 to 14 mm.

Systematics, distribution and hazard

Aztekium ritteri is common in the Sierra Madre Oriental in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, where it grows on limestone and gypsum rock.

The first description as Echinocactus ritteri by Frederick Boedeker was published in 1928. A year later Boedeker put them in by him newly established species Aztekium.

Aztekium ritteri be listed in Annex I of the CITES Convention. In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN we the species as "Least Concern ( LC) ," ie, not compromised as in nature, classified.
