Bačka Topola

Bačka Topola (Serbian Cyrillic - Бачка Топола, Hungarian Topolya ) is a town in the district of Severna Bačka in Vojvodina in Serbia. It is the seat of Bačka Topola Opština and has 16,171 inhabitants ( 2002).

Geography

Backa Topola in the region of Backa. The city is located in the north of Vojvodina. The surrounding area is largely flat terrain, which also cross the traffic directions north-south and east - west. There is moderate continental climate, which the agricultural economy benefits. The soil of the region is considered to be very fruitful. From Subotica, the city is about 32 km, 45 km from Sombor and Novi Sad from 69 km.

Population

According to the 2002 census, the city had about 16,171 inhabitants (1991 there were 16,704 inhabitants), of which, inter alia, about. 59.25 % Hungarians, 29.05% Serbs, Montenegrins, 2.63%, 2.32 % Yugoslavs, Croats 1.05% and 0.58 % Russian.

History

The oldest mention of a settlement falls in the year 1462 under the name Fibaych. At that time it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. To 1526 the Ottomans conquered the area. To dive in 1543 in Ottoman registers for the first time on the Slavic and Serbian name Topola. Towards the end of the 16th century include Ottoman cadastre to the 21 to 23 Serbian households in the village. 1688 Topola is conquered by the Empire of Austria during the Turkish wars, destroyed in 1704 by the kuruc. In reports of 1731, the village is considered to be depopulated. A resettlement place in 1750 with about 200 Hungarians and Slovaks held. 1918, the majority of Hungarian community Yugoslavia is awarded.
