Bagalkot ( Kannada: ಬಾಗಲಕೋಟೆ Bāgalakōṭe [ba ː ː ɡələko ʈe ], also Bagalkote ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with around 110,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the administrative seat of the district of Bagalkot.

Bagalkot is located in northern Karnataka 500 km northwest of Bangalore and 130 kilometers northeast of Hubli on the banks of Ghataprabha, a tributary of the Krishna. The city lies at an altitude of 530 meters above sea level in the highlands of the Deccan. Over the railway line from Gadag about Bijapur after Solapur Bagalkot is connected to the railway network. The National Highway 218 from Hubli via Bijapur Gulbarga leads after about ten kilometers to the west past Bagalkot.

Bagalkot belonged in the 16th century Vijayanagar Empire. From 1664 to 1755 it was under the rule of the Nawab of Savanur. Thereafter, the property of the city changed hands several times between the Marathenreich and Hyder Ali of Mysore. In the Third Marathenkrieg it was finally conquered in 1818 by the British. The British annexed Bagalkot as part of the district Bijapur of Bombay Presidency in British India. After Indian independence, the city came in 1956 by the States Reorganisation Act in the structures created by the language barriers of the Kannada State of Mysore (1973 renamed Karnataka ). Since 1997, Bagalkot is the district capital.
