History

First houses were built in the early 17th century. The name of the town derives from the term mining camp place, as already past time in the area mining ( mining) was operated. " Bal " means in the Cornish language Mining and " combe " is probably derived from the Roman word camp. It is a Celtic- Roman coinage.

In soil under Balcombe, large fields are with oily rock, after the hydraulic fracturing process ( fracking ) can be used for oil extraction. However, as a further test drilling to test for a possible economic recovery should be carried out, it came in 2013 to significant protests from the population. Opponents and supporters of the political Frackings tried to use the conflict. At the protests there were also arrests of protesters who had competed with the motto "Frack off".
