Baldwin of Avesnes

Baldwin of Avesnes (franz: Baudouin d' Avesnes, * September 1219, † April 10, 1295 ) was a French nobleman and chronicler in the 13th century.

Baldwin came from the high noble house Avesnes and was the second son of Burkhard of Avesnes and Countess Margarethe II of Flanders Hainaut. His parents' marriage was canonically illegitimate, so Baldwin and his older brother John were regarded as illegitimate children. In addition, her father was her birth under excommunication. In the dispute over her mother's heritage, the Avesnes- brothers took the Flemish succession war against their half-brothers from the house of Dampierre. The Avesnes- brothers were under the influence of King Louis IX. of France IV legitimized in 1251 by Pope Innocent and received the County of Hainaut from the maternal inheritance. As a younger brother Baldwin received the castle of Beaumont as its own fiefdom.

Baldwin completed around 1280, a two-part written in Old French Universal Chronicle, which he begins with the biblical story of creation and can end in the year 1278. Baldwin was married to Felicite de Coucy († 1307 ), a daughter of Thomas de Coucy, Lord of Vervins out of the house Boves, and Mathilde de Rethel. They had two children and several grandchildren:
