Ballon d'Alsace

Ballon d'Alsace

The 1,247 m high Ballon d'Alsace (French Ballon d'Alsace, pronunciation: [ ˌ ba Lo dalzas ] ), also Vlašský Ballon, is a mountain in the south of the Vosges. It is located in the border region of Alsace with Lorraine and Upper Burgundy in the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

The Ballon d'Alsace is the western corner of the Ballon d' triangle and the center of the Ballon d' system.

From the summit offers mainly in the direction of Mont Blanc is a very beautiful panorama. The Ballon d'Alsace extends to the area of four municipalities, four departments and three regions:

  • Sewen (Haut-Rhin, Alsace );
  • Saint- Maurice- sur -Moselle (Vosges, Lorraine);
  • Plancher -les -Mines (Haute -Saône, Franche -Comté );
  • Lepuix ( Territoire -de- Belfort, Franche -Comté ).

The summit is therefore part of the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean.

It is one of the rainiest parts of France and also known for the purity of the air. In winter you can ski ( downhill or cross-country), in the summer there is mountain biking or paragliding you can.

The road that connects the Moselle valley to the north by the valleys of the Savoureuse in the south and the east leads Doller, near the summit at 1,171 meters above pass.

The Ballon d'Alsace was on July 10, 1905 scene of the first mountain stage of the Tour de France, in which only Georges Passerieu managed to rise without getting off the bike. The mountain was defeated 100 years later in the 2005 Tour de France for the anniversary on the 9th stage again.
