Banarsi Das Gupta

Banarsi Das Gupta ( born November 5, 1917 in Manheru, Bhiwani, † August 29 2007 in New Delhi, Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress. From 1975 to 1977 and 1990 he was Chief Minister of the state of Haryana.

After his schooling in Pilani in Rajasthan, he was socially and politically (now in Haryana ) is involved in the Jind State and was imprisoned several times. He sat down in particular and for the agricultural and outcaste Harijans, but also against discriminatory social traditions. Particularly in rural areas, he urged on education, abolition of the dowry system and child marriage, and for the right to remarriage for widows.

Gupta was chief patron of several educational institutions in Haryana. He was elected three times to the parliament of the state of Haryana and once served as its spokesman. Some years he was a Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and twice Chief Minister of Haryana. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996.

For a long time he was the editor of the Hindi weekly newspapers Apna Desh and Haryana Kesri.

Banarsi Das Gupta was married and had a son and two daughters.
