Banatski Despotovac

Banatski Despotovac ( Cyrillic Банатски Деспотовац, Hungarian Ernőháza, German Ernst Oberhausen) is a place in the Serbian Banat, about 20 km east of Zrenjanin, 98 kilometers north of Belgrade.

History

It was founded in 1822 as Danube Swabian settlement. The census in 1930 showed a population of 2421 people.

The local foundation began with the "Settlement Agreement" dated 15 September 1821. Currently, the town founded by the landowner Feldmarschalleutnant Ernest Kiss de Elemer and Itebe was. The settlers were exclusively Roman Catholic faith and German. 1844 by the colonists a large school house built, which was used until 1944. On October 16, 1849 Ernest Kiss was shot in Arad. After payment of the first transfer fee, in 1860, was the land under contract, the property of the settlers. On December 8, 1888, the church was built in the Gothic style, was inaugurated. It was after 1945 - after the expulsion of the Danube Swabians as a result of AVNOJ resolutions - demolished.

According to the 1991 census, there were Banatski Despotovac 1,823 inhabitants.
