Central Banat District

Srednji Banat ( Serbian: Srednje - Banatski okrug or Средње - Банатски округ, Hungarian Közép- Bansagi körzet, rum. Districtul Banatul de Central, Slovak:. Sredobanátsky okres, German Middle Banat ) is a Serbian administrative district in the central part of Vojvodina.

It consists of the following municipalities:

  • Novi Bečej ( ungar: Törökbecse )
  • Nova Crnja ( ungar: Magyarcsernye )
  • Žitište ( ungar: Bégaszentgyörgy )
  • Sečanj ( ungar: Szécsány )
  • Zrenjanin ( ungar: Nagybecskerek )

This district has 2002 221.253 inhabitants according to the census of the year. The main administrative center is the city of Zrenjanin.

The ethnic distribution is as follows: Serbs ( 150 794 or 75 %), Hungarians ( 27 842 ), Romania ( 5156 ).

There are many places in this district, for example, the Orthodox Church of the Assumption from 1746, the Roman Catholic Cathedral in 1868 and the church of education from 1891.

Main economic activities include agriculture, forestry, construction and transportation.

However, the leading industry is the food industry with the consolidated Servo Mihalj at the top. Other major companies are the brewery ZIP, the chemical combine Luxol and the furniture factory Zarko Zrenjanin.
