Banba

Banba [' banva ] is a queen of Ireland in the Celtic mythology of Ireland.

Mythology

In Lebor Gabála Érenn, during the invasion by the sons Míl Espanès, Banba is considered Bresals granddaughter, daughter of Delbaeth and Ernmas and as a sister Fohlas and Erius. Together with her two sisters she has of Amergin, who comes to the island by the Milesians, sought, that they should be considered as a symbol of the rule of the country Ireland. The name Banba is therefore sometimes used as a dense term for Ireland. But even by her death at the Battle of Tailtu (now Teltown ) against the Milesians is reported in a version of the legend.

In two different versions of the Three Sisters with the three brothers Mac Cecht ( [ mak ke ː xt ] " son of the plow ", with Fohla ), Mac Gréine ( [ mak ' gre ː ne] " Son of the Sun ", with Eriu ) and Mac Cuill ( [ mak KUL ] " son of the hazel ", married to Banba ), which the Tuatha de Danann take over the legitimate rule of the island. In the other version, the husband of the sisters, the brothers Sethor, Cethor and Tethor, the sons Cermats which is to be a son of the Dagda. In both versions, the three kings who ruled until the arrival of the Milesians over Ireland.

Fiacha mac Delbaíth, the brother of the three sisters, the predecessor of their men Cecht Mac, Mac Gréine and Mac Cuill to have been as high king of Ireland.

In some versions of the Lebor Gabála Érenn but Banba is also an alternative name of Cessair, the first settler of Ireland.
