Banibangou

Banibangou (also: Bani Bangou ) is a rural municipality and the capital of the eponymous department Banibangou in Niger.

Geography

Banibangou located in the Sahel region and is bordered to the north by the neighboring country of Mali. The neighboring communities in Niger are Abala in the east, and Dingazi Filingue in the south and Tondikiwindi in the West. The municipality is divided into 28 administrative villages, 65 traditional villages, 17 hamlets, nine camps and three water points. The main town of the rural community is Banibangou consisting of the administrative villages Bani Bangou Djerma and Banibangou Haoussa. Through the village runs a side valley of the Wadi Dallol Bosso.

History

Banibangou 1964 received the status of an administrative post (French: post administratif ). The rural municipality (French: commune Rurale ) Banibangou emerged as an administrative unit in the year 2002, when the Canton Tondikiwindi was divided between the newly created rural communities Tondikiwindi and Banibangou. 2008 floods caused property damage, of which more than 800 residents were directly affected. The administrative posts of Banibangou was removed in 2011 from the Department of Ouallam and collected at the Department Banibangou.

Population

At the 2001 census Banibangou had 40 351 inhabitants. For the year 2010 53.395 inhabitants were calculated. The majority provide Zarma, followed by Fulani, Tuareg and Hausa.

99 % of the population of Banibangou were classified in a study of the French NGO ACTED as poor or very poor 2011. More than 66 % of the population had no access to latrines in the vicinity.

Economy and infrastructure

The population lives predominantly of livestock, agriculture and commerce. The community is located at the junction of the zone of Agropastoralismus of the South to the zone of pure pastoral economy of the North. By Banibangou the National Road 24, which connects the village with the Nigerien capital Niamey, however, can not be used in the rainy season runs. The secluded location is one of the structural causes of the recurrent food insecurity in the community, which is strongly affected by migration to the capital and abroad.
