Ouallam is a department in the region Tilabéri in Niger.

Geography

The Department is located in the southwest of the country, bordering Mali. It consists of the township Ouallam and the rural communities Dingazi, Simiri and Tondikiwindi. The eponymous capital of the department is Ouallam.

History

After independence in 1960, Niger's territory into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ) was divided. One of them was the district Djermaganda, with the main town Ouallam. 1964 was divided into seven administrative reform Niger departments, the predecessor of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessor of the later departments. As part of the district Djermaganda was converted to the district Ouallam. In 1998, the former arrondissements of Niger were raised to departments, each headed by an appointed Council of Ministers is prefect. The structure of the department in communities exists since the year 2002. Previously, it consisted of the urban center Ouallam and the cantons Ouallam, Simiri and Tondikiwindi. 2011 Banibangou was dissolved as a separate department from the Department Ouallam. The 2013 appointed Prefect of Ouallam is Adamou Namata.

Population

The Department has Ouallam 2012 323.939 inhabitants according to the census. In the 2001 census, before the dissolution of Banibangou, there were 281 821 inhabitants in the census 1988 190 057 inhabitants in the census 1977 143 431 inhabitants. Ouallam is one of the poorest departments in Niger.
