Ouallam

Region

Ouallam is a town and the capital of the eponymous department Ouallam in Niger.

Geography

Ouallam is located in the southern Sahel. The neighboring municipalities are Tondikiwindi in the north, Dingazi in the east, Simiri in the south, southwest and Sakoïra Kourteye in the northwest. The municipality is divided into eleven districts, 35 administrative villages, seven traditional villages and 148 hamlets. The district hot Administratif, Gadama Windi, Gao Tchiré, Goroutché, Koira Tégui, Kongodabey, Mossi Windi, Niamassal, Soudjé, Tchemou Windi and Tribu Agala.

History

The city's name comes from the word Willim, the " forest " means. The area of Ouallam was once heavily forested, which has changed drastically due to human interventions and climatic changes. The infertility of the soil repeatedly led to famine and mass emigration.

Population

In the 1977 census Ouallam had 3,712 inhabitants in the census in 1988 6,229 inhabitants in the 2001 census 7,142 inhabitants. For the year 2010 66.798 inhabitants were, by an increase in the municipal area to parts of the dissolved canton Ouallam calculated. The main ethnic group in the city are the Zarma. Economy and infrastructure

The city is located in a zone in which mainly rain-fed agriculture is operated. Of economic importance is also the labor migration abroad. On the market of Ouallam cowpea and cereals are traded according to the Nigerien capital Niamey and Benin and Nigeria. The city is the seat of the Tribunal d' Instance, one of the nation's 30 civil courts, which is below the ten civil courts of first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance ) are. By Ouallam the National Road 24, which connects the city to Niamey and the border with Mali at Banibangou runs. In Ouallam a civilian airport located with unpaved airstrip, the Ouallam Airport ( ICAO code: DRRU ).
