Bank of China Tower (Hong Kong)

The Bank of China Tower is a 367 meter high office tower in Hong Kong. It hosts the headquarters of the Bank of China (Hong Kong).

Description and Architecture

The geometric shape composed of four standing together triangular elements, rising from a granite podium. The items have different heights and run on inclined surfaces along each other, which is reminiscent of a crystal. The outer surfaces consist of a truss structure, forms the large triangular surfaces of reflective glass. The steel beams are wearing white fluorescent strips that are animated at night.

Was built the tower by architect IM Pei, who created, among other things, the glass pyramid of the Louvre in Paris. The inspiration he gave to bamboo, which is a positive symbol in Chinese culture.

In the city, the building stands out from the other, making it a characteristic feature of the city. As a criticism, however, argued that it does not correspond to the principles of Feng Shui. The 43rd floor of the building is open to visitors and offers a view of Victoria Harbour and across to Kowloon. Like many other skyscrapers reached the Bank of China its official height of 367 m only including the metal spikes on the roof. They belong to the building architecture, because they were provided by the architect in the design, which would not be the case for example with radio antennas. Up to the roof of the tower is 305 m high.

The building was built by the Bank of China, whose logo is located at the south entrance. Later it became part of the newly formed subsidiary Bank of China (Hong Kong), which has its headquarters in the building. Some floors are leased, including those belonging to the parent company. In contrast to the surrounding high-rise buildings is omitted an illuminated logo on the roof.

The building is depicted published on the front of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Hong Kong dollar banknotes.

At present, the tower is the fourth tallest building in the city after the International Commerce Centre, Two International Finance Centre and Central Plaza. After its completion in 1990, the Bank of China Tower was for two years until the completion of Central Plaza in 1992, the tallest building in the city.
