Banteay Meanchey Province

The Banteay Meanchey Province (Khmer: Bântéay Meancheay បន្ទាយ មាន ជយ; IPA: [ mi ː ə̯nceə̯j ə̯j ɓɑnti ː ] ) is located in northwestern Cambodia, and thus bordering on Thailand. The provincial capital is called Sisophon.

The province is divided into eight districts:

  • Mongkol Borey ' ( មង្គលបុរី )
  • Phnum Srok ( ភ្នំស្រុក )
  • Preah Preah NETR ( ព្រះនេត្រព្រះ )
  • Ou Chrov ( អូរជ្រៅ )
  • Serei Saophoan ( សិរីសោភ័ណ )
  • Thma Pouk ( ថ្មពួក )
  • Svay Chek ( ស្វាយចេក )
  • Malai ( ម៉ា ល័ យ )

History

The province, whose name can be roughly translated with fortress of victory, was already at the time of Angkor integral part of the Khmer Empire. Some remaining temples of the 12th century testify today. In the 17th century the neighboring Siam got control of the region, which had to be submitted later but to the French colonial power. At Banteay Meanchey whose time still belonged to the neighboring province of Battambang. In 1988 the province was divided.
