Barguna District

Barguna ( Bengali: বরগুনা জেলা, Baragunā Jela ) is an administrative district in southwest Bangladesh, which lies within the Barisal Division.

The 1831.31 km ² large district is bordered to the north by the neighboring districts Jhalokathi, Barisal, Patuakhali and Pirojpur, in the east and south by Patuakhali, in the south and the Bay of Bengal, and on the west by the districts Pirojpur and Bagerhat.

The main rivers are the Payra, the Bishkhali and the Baleshwar.

Barguna is divided into the five so-called Upazilas: Barguna Sadar, Amtali, Patharghata, Betagi and Bamna. Within this administrative subdivision there are 38 Union Parishads (village councils), 560 villages and four cities 4.

History

During the British colonial rule in the 18th century when the area was part of the larger district Barisal, a police station was built in Barguna. Since 1984 it is an independent administrative district of Bangladesh.

Economy
