Barnabas

Barnabas was from the Israelite tribe of Levi, but came from Cyprus. After the hedged text of Acts 4,36 EU he was also named Josef (in some manuscripts Joses ). Barnabas (Greek Βαρνάβας ) is in the Bible several times mentioned (Acts, 1 Corinthians, Galatians ) and after late traditions to the disciples of Jesus, but do not count towards the innermost Twelve Apostles. He is said to have preached in Rome, held office in Milan as Bishop of Rome and Clemens baptized.

Barnabas said to have died as a martyr in Cyprus, according to the apocryphal acts Barnabas, where he is regarded as a national saint. According to this legend strand the year 61 is considered his year of death, as the site is given at Salamis Famagusta.

Life and certificates

According to the Acts of the Apostles, Joseph called Barnabas was a member of the first Christian community in Jerusalem, which he promoted the sale proceeds of an asset (Acts 4,36 f.) His name Barnabas is interpreted as " son of consolation ", see at the origin and meaning of the name. According to Acts 9:27, he was responsible for the acceptance of Paul in the Jerusalem apostles. Historically, however, this applies as -is highly controversial.

According to Acts 11.22-30; 13.1 Barnabas had missionary, especially in Antioch. In the local community of Jewish and Gentile Christians, he, together with Peter and Paul, whom he introduces himself there, and other works. In Acts 13 and 14 is reported that he conducted a missionary journey through Cyprus and southern Asia Minor with Paul as a companion. Undeniably Barnabas was one of the leading early Christian missionaries. He was also one of the participants at the Apostolic Council (Acts 15:1-5 and Gal.2 0.1 to 10 ).

The New Testament also reports of disagreement between Barnabas and Paul: For one, it was about the possibility of table fellowship of Jewish and Gentile Christians in Antioch ( Gal 2:11-13 ). On the other hand, a dispute over the entrainment of John Mark turned on another missionary journey (Acts 15:36-41 ).

The " Epistle of Barnabas " does not come with some certainty from him, since the letter was only in the first half of the 2nd century. It contains unusual interpretations of the Old Testament ( allegory ), and polemic against Judaism. The early Christian writer Tertullian wrote to the Hebrews, Barnabas. Add to Barnabas files reported by his missionary journeys and his martyrdom in Cyprus. The work dates from the 6th century. The Gospel of Barnabas, which is received in an Italian manuscript from the 16th century, originated in the Christian view until the 14th - 16th Century. Another, however, preserved only in the fragment, Spanish manuscript reports that a monk called Fra Marino is said to have stolen the gospel of the Pope Sixtus V Library secretly. It proclaimed Muhammad as the true prophet and Jesus as his predecessor, did not die on the cross, nor is the Son of God. Therefore, it is argued to Bekräftung of their own religious views of Muslim side. That is actually a " gospel existed under the name of Barnabas in the old church, occupies the Decretum de libris Gelasianum recipiendis et non recipiendis " ( 496 AD ), a list of permitted and forbidden books. In the Turkish newspaper " Türkiye " was released on 25 July 1986, a report indicating that an Aramaic manuscript of the Gospel of Barnabas on the mountain meme in Uludere ( Southern Anatolia) was discovered. The fact that hardly churches and monasteries were named after Barnabas, is because he withdraws completely into the shadow of Paul in the New Testament. However, there is a Barnabites Order, which was named after a Barnabas Church.

St. Barnabas Monastery

About eight kilometers north of Famagusta and two kilometers west of Salamis is the St. Barnabas Monastery and the tomb where the martyrs Barnabas is venerated as a Cypriot national saint. The system includes the monastery church, monastery building with the Museum of Icons and archeology, and the grave of the Holy Church. The facility is located on the western edge of the necropolis of Salamis, between the ancient city of Salamis / Constantia and the archaic city Enkomi.

The monastery is AD, the present monastery church to have been built on a former building of the 10th century in 1756 by Archbishop Philotheos in 477. After departure of the last three monks in 1976, the unchanged Monastery Church as Icon Museum, the monastery buildings are used as an archaeological museum.

The artifacts of the archaeological museum is in particular to very many exceptional ceramics from Enkomi ( about 7000 to 1000 BC ) and Salamis, unless they have been spent not in the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia or the British Museum in London.
