Award

It was created in 1838 for the former Member of Parliament for Wiltshire and North Wiltshire, Paul Methuen. The grandfather of the first Baron, Paul Methuen, was the cousin and heir of Sir Paul Methuen, at the time of a well-known politician, courtier, diplomat and patron of the arts and literature. This in turn was the son of John Methuen (1650-1706), Lord Chancellor of Ireland 1697-1703 and Ambassador to Portugal. The latter acted out of the Methuenvertrag. He foresaw that England export without obstacles textiles to Portugal (whose colonies ) was allowed, while Portugal executed port wine to England. This agreement eventually led to French Burgundy was replaced in the English market by port wine.

The third Baron Paul Methuen, was a deserving soldier and Governor of Malta. His son, the fourth Baron, was a professional artist and member of the Royal Academy. After his death, the title fell to his younger brother, the fifth Baron Methuen. Since 2009, the title is guided by the younger son of the latter, the seventh Baron, who gained the title after the death of his older brother. Lord Methuen is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers that are 1999 member of the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act. He sits there on the benches of the Liberal Democratic Party.
