The Collegiate is the royal palace chapel in the Sicilian city of Catania and is located on Via Etnea.

History

In the first centuries of Christianity, a small chapel was built on the site of the present church, which was dedicated to the Madonna dell'Elemosina. The church, which gained more and more importance in the centuries that followed, was attended by the kings of Aragon and their yard ( 1396 ). Therefore, it was nicknamed Regia cappella.

With the Bull of March 13, 1446 the Pope Eugene IV, a priest college was also set up. Hence the name comes Collegiate (priest college). The Collegiate had to be rebuilt after the eruption of Mount Etna in 1669 again. Its façade was applied parallel to the Via Etnea (formerly Via Uzeda ). The construction of the church is attributed to the architect Antonio Amato designed by the Jesuit Angelo Italia. The facade itself is a work of the architect Stefano Ittar from the year 1758. 1946 she received by Pope Pius XII. the title of a papal basilica minor.

Affairs

The plan of the church corresponds to a Latin cross and was equipped with frescoes of painter Francesco Gramignani, Giuseppe Sciuti and Olivio Sozzi.
