Basinio da Parma (also Basinio Basini or Basinus Parmensis, * 1425 in Vezzano at Parma; † 24 or May 25, 1457 in Rimini) was an Italian epic poet and lyricist.

Life

Basinio was the son of a soldier from Mantua, the home town of Virgil. At first he was just a simple education. His father sent him but then to Mantua to Vitorino da Feltre, where he learned Latin, and Theodorus Gaza, who taught him Greek. After the death because of Feltre on February 2, 1446 Basinio Theodorus followed to Ferrara. He sat where he continued his Greek studies and received his training at Guarino da Verona Latin. He was strongly influenced by two teachers. According to Theodorus ' could only properly learn Latin, if you could also Greek. This opinion adopted Basinio. From that he also has his affection for Homer. In Ferrara, he makes the acquaintance of Leonello d' Este and stayed in the court life and was a member of literary circles. 12 elegies on Cyris and one on Hippodamia, all follow the classical models: There also his first poetic attempts originated. In addition, published texts that are grouped together today under the name carmina varia. These include letters in poetic form and small text with Homer references. These texts also provide evidence for dating of works and operation of the author. His first epic is the Meleagris. It was dedicated to Leonello d' Este, who was an avid hunter. 1447 is Basinio da Parma on a diplomatic mission. After the death of Filippo Maria Visconti, Francesco Sforza was to be his successor. Basinios mission was to bring about the liberation of Parma from the dependence of Milan. Probably as a reward for the Meleagris he received a teaching position for 1448/1449. As a consequence of his diplomatic mission Basinio fought since Parma in 1449 on the side of Niccolo Guerriero Terzi at Castello di Guardasone against Alessandro Sforza. After the castle had fallen, Parma had to stay at Milan and Francesco Sforza became duke of Milan. As the letters attest, he left probably before the death of Leonello d' Este ( October 1, 1450 ) Ferrara. He went to the court of Rimini Sigismondo Malatesta, where he since Valmontone struck by a grave poem on the local court poet Giusto. The intellectual debate that time about the status of the Greek was performed at the court of Rimini: Basinio da Parma met on two avowed enemies of the Greek: Porcelio Pandoni and Tommaso Seneca because Camerino. In Rimini, he continued his work. On May 24 1457 he wrote his will in which he expressed the desire to obtain a self-chosen grave saying, which he based on Ennius. The saying is: Parma mihi patria est, sunt SYDERA carmen et astra, suggesting a clear orientation to the grave saying of Virgil. He also imitated Virgil with a desire to be burned his Hesperis. On the same or the following day he died. Also on own request, he was buried in the Malatesta Temple.
