Batman ( formerly Iluh, Armenian Բաթման ) is the capital of the Turkish province of Batman. The city is named after the river Batman and had 2012 348.963 inhabitants. An older name of the city is Elih ( kurd. Êlih ). A railroad track leads to Istanbul, next to it there is an airport. The city was until the 1950s a small village and only through the establishment of companies in the oil industry increased the number of inhabitants. So a mayor (tr. Belediye ) was established in 1955 in Batman and Batman independently by law on 16 May 1990 as a 72 province of Turkey.

Sports

The city and the province of Batman have with the sports club Batman Petrolspor since the 1960s, a sports club, who represents the city especially in football and wrestling.
