The Battle of Jemappes found on November 6, 1792 in the area around the village Jemappes (now in Belgium). It fought the French under Charles -François Dumouriez, who won the battle against the Austrians under Duke Albert of Saxe -Teschen and Count Clerfait.

Course

The Duke of Saxe -Teschen had to send several detachments. He therefore took with his remaining 26,000 men from a fixed height position at Jemappes one to await the promised reinforcements. On the morning of November 6, the attack of the French, who were strong in about 40,000 men took place.

The fight had passed several hours without a decision only in a continuous cannonade, as Dumouriez was around noon the order to attack.

While he stormed even the redoubts of the left, Thouvenot the right wing, Louis-Philippe took in the center of the village Jemappes. The Austrians retreated with a loss of 7,000 men and 8 guns on Mons. The winners had lost 4,000 men.

As a result of battle, the Austrian Netherlands came under complete control of France. Even if she was not militarily paramount importance, so they brought the first major conquest of the young republic and was described by Jules Michelet as a great moral victory against the old Europe.

The 1795 newly formed Département de Jemappes was named after the battle.
