Battle of Liscarroll

The Battle of Liscarroll took place during the Irish Konföderationskriege in July 1642 near the town of Liscarroll ( County Cork) instead. A Confederate Army (the militia of the local Lords) under Garret Barry met an English army ( soldiers and Protestant settlers ) under Murrough O'Brien. Barry besieged Liscarroll Castle on the Munster Blackwater to isolate the English siege of Cork. But O'Brien came with his troops near to help, so that it finally came to battle.

The Confederate cavalry was led by Oliver Stephenson, a descendant of Protestant settlers, who had joined because of his Catholic faith of the Irish troops. The 500 riders managed O'Brien troops to disperse and O'Brien could even capture. But in this battle Stephenson was shot by O'Brien's brother through the eye slit of his helmet, which meant that the Irish troops leaderless panicked and withdrew. The counter-attack of the English cavalry could not withstand the Irish foot soldiers and also fled. More than 700 Irish soldiers died in the battle and the subsequent escape. Also, the resident nobility was decimated by the battle - for example, the family of the Fitzgeralds lost 18 family members. In addition to these losses O'Brien hung also 50 captured soldiers. By winning this battle of Cork city remained a Protestant stronghold in the south of Ireland for the rest of the war.
