Battle of Kilrush

The Battle of Kilrush (English Battle of Kilrush, Irish Cath Chill Rois ) was a minor skirmish during the Irish Konföderationskriege in June 1642 near the town of Kilrush, County Kildare, between an English army under James Butler and a troupe of Irish rebels under Richard Butler.

James Butler was with his army to destroy on a journey through rebel-held areas as punishment for joining the rebellion the lands of landowners. His troops marched from Dublin to Portlaoise to support the local garrison and back to Dublin. On the way back the English army was intercepted by the Irish troops near the town of Athy in Kilrush.

The Irish troops were poorly equipped and untrained. Therefore, a large part of the Irish rebels already fled after a brief fight in a nearby bog. While Irish sources only report small losses, claimed James Butler 500 Irish rebels of killing - the actual number is unknown. After the battle James Butler returned with his army to Dublin.
