Battle of Sailor's Creek

As battles at Sailor's Creek ( common spelling and Sayler 's Creek ) refers to three fighting independently, held on the same day, but within the Appomattox campaign of the Northern states in the closing stages of the American Civil War on April 6, 1865. This was about a quarter of the elusive Northern Virginia Army of the return path through the Cavalry Corps and the II and VI. Corps of the Potomac Army cut off. The reserve corps under the leadership of Lieutenant General Richard Stoddert Ewell's rear guard attacked in the afternoon at the pursuing associations, but failed before the artillery positions. The Union corps was able then to surpass both edges of the reserve corps and to encircle the corps.

The II Corps Major General John Brown Gordon of Northern Virginia Army succeeded in taking heavy losses to elude a supporting and continue to march along the Southside railway line to the west.

Among the prisoners of Northern Virginia Army there were also at least eight generals. The commander of the Northern Virginia Army, General Robert E. Lee had lost about a quarter of his army and surrendered at Appomattox Court House only three days later. Shocked by the condition of the soldiers of the army during the crossing of the river Lee said, " My God, Has Dissolved the army? " ( German: "My God, the army has dissolved ").

The grounds on which the battles took place, was declared in 1985 under the name Sayler 's Creek Battlefield to the National Historic Landmark.
