Amelia County, Virginia
Amelia County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 11,400 inhabitants and a population density of 12 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Amelia.
Amelia County is located just east of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 929 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Powhatan County, Chesterfield County, Dinwiddie County, Nottoway County, Prince Edward County and Cunmberland County.
Made it in 1734 from parts of Brunswick County and Prince George County. It was named after Princess Amalia Sophia of Great Britain. During the Civil War General Robert Edward Lee and his army spent the 4 and 5 April 1865 in Amelia before her meeting with General Ulysses S. Grant and the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
According to the census of 2000, there were 11,400 people in Amelia County. Of these, 106 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,240 households and 3,175 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.57 percent White, 28.05 percent Black or African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.25 percent from other races groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.80 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,240 households out of which 32.8 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, 25.1 percent were non-families, 20.7 percent of all households and 8.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.07.
Based on the county the population was spread from 25.3 percent population under 18 years, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 40,252, and the median income for a family was $ 47,157. Males have a median income of $ 32,315, women $ 23,102. The per capita income was $ 18,858. 8.4 percent of the population and 6.7 percent of families are below the poverty line. Among them were 7.1 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 11.7 percent of seniors aged 65 and over.
