Amelia County, Virginia

Amelia County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 11,400 inhabitants and a population density of 12 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Amelia.

Geography

Amelia County is located just east of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 929 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Powhatan County, Chesterfield County, Dinwiddie County, Nottoway County, Prince Edward County and Cunmberland County.

History

Made it in 1734 from parts of Brunswick County and Prince George County. It was named after Princess Amalia Sophia of Great Britain. During the Civil War General Robert Edward Lee and his army spent the 4 and 5 April 1865 in Amelia before her meeting with General Ulysses S. Grant and the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
