Amelia County, Virginia

Amelia County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 11,400 inhabitants and a population density of 12 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Amelia.

Geography

Amelia County is located just east of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 929 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Powhatan County, Chesterfield County, Dinwiddie County, Nottoway County, Prince Edward County and Cunmberland County.

History

Made it in 1734 from parts of Brunswick County and Prince George County. It was named after Princess Amalia Sophia of Great Britain. During the Civil War General Robert Edward Lee and his army spent the 4 and 5 April 1865 in Amelia before her meeting with General Ulysses S. Grant and the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.

The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.07.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.3 percent population under 18 years, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 men statistically.
