Orange County (Virginia)
Orange County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 25,881 inhabitants and a population density of 29 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is orange.
Orange County is located in north-central Virginia and has an area of 889 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Culpeper County, Spotsylvania County, Louisa County, Albemarle County, Greene County and Madison County.
Made it in 1734 from parts of Spotsylvania County. It was named after Prince William IV of Orange. In the American Civil War took place here in the battle of the Wilderness on 5 and 6 May 1864 instead.
According to the census in 2000, lived in Orange County, 25,881 people in 10,150 households and 7,470 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 84.36 percent White, 13.78 percent Black or African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.39 percent from other races groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.28 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,150 households out of which 29.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 26.4 percent were non-families, 22.1 percent of all households and 10.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread out 23.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 42,889, and the median income for a family was $ 48,197. Males have a median income of $ 31,982, women $ 24,209. The per capita income was $ 21,107. 7.1 percent of families and 9.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 11.6 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 10.8 percent of those 65 years.
