Buckingham County, Virginia
Buckingham County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 15,623 inhabitants and a population density of 10 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Buckingham.
Buckingham County is located near the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 1511 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Fluvanna County, Cumberland County, Prince Edward County, Appomattox County, Nelson County and Albemarle County.
Made it in 1761 as from parts of Albemarle County and Appomattox County.
According to the census in 2000 lived in Buckingham County 15,623 people in 5,324 households and 3,758 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 59.11 percent White, 39.06 percent Black or African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.36 percent from other races groups; 1.08 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.81 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,324 households out of which 30.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.1 percent were married couples living together, 14.2 percent were single mothers, 29.4 percent were non-families, 25.1 percent of all households and 11.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99.
Based on the county the population was spread from 22.4 percent population under 18 years, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 31.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 121.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 126.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,882, and the median income for a family was $ 37,465. Males have a median income of $ 26,302, women $ 20,491. The per capita income was $ 13,669. 16.0 percent of families and 20.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 26.0 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 19.3 percent of those 65 years.
