Cumberland County (Virginia)

Cumberland County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 9017 inhabitants and a population density of 12 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Cumberland.

Geography

Cumberland County is located near the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 776 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Goochland County, Powhatan County, Amelia County, Prince Edward County, Buckingham County and Fluvanna County.

History

Made it in 1749 from parts of Goochland County and Buckingham County. It was named after Wilhelm August, Duke of Cumberland, the third son of George II, King of England.
