Cumberland County (Virginia)
Cumberland County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 9017 inhabitants and a population density of 12 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Cumberland.
Cumberland County is located near the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of 776 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Goochland County, Powhatan County, Amelia County, Prince Edward County, Buckingham County and Fluvanna County.
Made it in 1749 from parts of Goochland County and Buckingham County. It was named after Wilhelm August, Duke of Cumberland, the third son of George II, King of England.
According to the census of 2000, there were 9,017 people in Cumberland County in 3528 households and 2,487 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 60.37 percent White, 37.44 percent Black or African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, and 0.59 percent from other races; 1.06 per cent were descended from two or more races. 1.66 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,528 households out of which 30.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.6 percent were married couples living together, 14.3 percent were single mothers, 29.5 percent were non-families, 24.8 percent of all households and 10.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.7 percent population under 18 years, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 31,816, and the median income for a family was $ 37,965. Males have a median income of $ 28,846, women $ 22,521. The per capita income was $ 15,103. 15.1 percent of the population and 11.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 19.6 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 16.1 percent of those 65 years.
