Sussex County (Virginia)
Sussex County is a county in the United States Virginia United States. In 2000, the County had 12,504 inhabitants and a population density of 10 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sussex.
Sussex County is located in southeastern Virginia, is located in the south about 30 miles from North Carolina and has an area of 1276 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Surry County, Southampton County, Greenville County, Dinwiddie County and Prince George County.
Made it was in 1754 from parts of Surry County.
According to the census in 2000 lived in Sussex County 12,504 people in 4,126 households and 2,809 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 36.39 percent White, 62.13 percent Black or African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.54 percent from other races groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.82 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,126 households out of which 28.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.0 percent were married couples living together, 18.9 percent were single mothers, 31.9 percent were non-families, 28.2 percent of all households and 12.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
Based on the county the population was spread from 19.6 percent population under 18 years, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 34.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 135.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 142.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,007, and the median income for a family was $ 36,739. Males have a median income of $ 29,307, women $ 22,001. The per capita income was $ 14,670. 12.8 percent of families and 16.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 24.3 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 19.2 percent of those 65 years.
