Bland County, Virginia
Bland County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 6871 inhabitants and a population density of 7 people per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bland. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Bland County is located in the central southwest Virginia, is bordered on the north by West Virginia and has an area of 929 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Giles County, Pulaski County, Wythe County, Smyth County and Tazewell County.
Made it in 1861 from parts of Giles County, Tazewell County and Wythe County and was named after Richard Blend, a statesman from Virginia, who was several times elected to the House of Burgesses and was from 1774 to 1775 Delegate to the Continental Congress.
According to the census in 2000 lived in Bland County 6,871 people in 2,568 households and 1,908 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 94.82 percent White, 4.19 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.09 percent from other races groups; 0.68 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,568 households out of which 28.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, 25.7 percent were non-families, 23.3 percent of all households and 10.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.85.
Based on the county the population was spread from 19.4 percent population under 18 years, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 119.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 121.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,397, and the median income for a family was $ 35,765. Males had a median income of $ 30,801, women $ 23,380. The per capita income was $ 17,744. 12.4 percent of the population and 9.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 14.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 22.6 percent of those 65 years.
