Dickenson County, Virginia
Dickenson County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States and is Virginia's newest County. In the 2000 census, the county had 16,395 inhabitants and a population density of 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Clintwood. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Dickenson County is located almost in the far west of Virginia, bordered to the north Kentucky and has an area of 864 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Buchanan County, Russell County and Wise County.
Made it in 1880 from parts of Buchanan County, Russell County and Wise County. It was named after the political leader William J. Dickinson.
According to the census of 2000, lived in Dickenson County 16,395 people in 6,732 households and 4,887 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.96 percent White, 0.35 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, and 0.05 percent from other races; 0.45 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.43 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,732 households out of which 30.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families, 25.3 percent of all households and 11.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.88.
Based on the county the population was spread from 22.1 percent population under 18 years, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 23,431, and the median income for a family was $ 27,986. Males have a median income of $ 27,281, women $ 17,695. The per capita income was $ 12,822. 16.9 percent of families and 21.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 26.8 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 17.3 percent of those 65 years.
