Montgomery County (Virginia)
Montgomery County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 83 629 inhabitants and a population density of 83 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Christiansburg. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Montgomery County is located in the central southwest Virginia, is located in the north about 30 miles from West Virginia and has an area of 1009 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Roanoke County, Floyd County, Pulaski County, Giles County and Craig County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 83 629 people in Montgomery County. Of these, 9,160 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 30,997 households and 17,203 families. The population density was 83 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 90.00 percent White, 3.65 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 3.97 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.63 percent from other races groups; 1.53 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 30,997 households out of which 25.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers, 44.5 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent of all households and 6.6 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.87.
Based on the county the population was spread from 17.1 percent population under 18 years, 31.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 17.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 8.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 110.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 110.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,330, and the median income for a family was $ 47,239. Males have a median income of $ 33,674, women $ 23,555. The per capita income was $ 17,077. 8.8 percent of families and 23.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 14.6 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 8.8 percent of the population aged 65 years.
