Northampton County (Virginia)
Northampton County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 13,093 inhabitants and a population density of 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Eastville.
Northampton County is located in the south on the Delmarva Peninsula, Virginia upstream on the Chesapeake Bay and has an area of 2,060 square kilometers, of which 1523 square miles are water. It is bordered to the north by the Accomack County.
Made it in 1634 as an Original County. From colonial times to today, the production of agricultural products came first. The first farmer planted to tobacco and also later the livestock was added. Most animals grazed freely on the peninsula, as the sea formed a natural barrier. The many small rivers were used to transport up to the Chesapeake Bay or the Atlantic Ocean as waterways around the products. 1880 has been built in this area, the first railway line and along the rails formed new settlements.
According to the census of 2000, there were 13,093 people in Northampton County. Of these, 367 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,321 households and 3,543 families. The population density was 24 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 53.29 percent White, 43.03 percent Black or African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.12 percent from other races groups; 1.17 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,321 households out of which 25.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.3 percent were married couples living together, 17.5 percent were single mothers, 33.4 percent were non-families, 29.4 percent of all households and 15.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94.
Based on the county the population was spread from 23.3 percent population under 18 years, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 21.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.1 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 28,276, and the median income for a family was $ 35,034. Males had a median income of $ 26,842, women $ 21,839. The per capita income was $ 16,591. 15.8 percent of families and 20.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 29.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 16.5 percent of the population aged 65 years.
