Bedford is an independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia with 6,222 inhabitants ( 2010). It is the county seat ( county seat ) of Bedford County.

History

The population of Bedford was in 1944 at about 3,200 inhabitants. 19 soldiers died on D-Day, 3 other soldiers died in the following days in the fighting in Normandy. Bedford has suffered in terms of population numbers in the Normandy landings, the highest losses of all American communities. Therefore, the National D -Day Memorial was inaugurated on 6 June 2001 in the presence of the then U.S. President George W. Bush in Bedford.

Geography

The urban area extends over an area of 17.9 km ², of which 17.8 km ² of land and 0.1 km ² water. The center is located at an altitude of 306 m.
