Lancaster County (Virginia)
Lancaster County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County 11,567 inhabitants and a population density of 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lancaster.
Lancaster County is located in Eastern Virginia and has an area of 599 square kilometers, of which 254 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Middlesex County, Richmond County and Northumberland County.
Made it was in 1651 from parts of Northumberland County and York County. The County is the birthplace of Mary Ball Washington, the second wife of Augustine Washington and the mother of George Washington.
According to the census in 2000 lived in Lancaster County 11,567 people in 5,004 households and 3,412 families. The population density was 34 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 69.95 percent White, 28.88 percent Black or African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.10 percent from other races groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.61 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,004 households out of which 21.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers, 31.8 percent were non-families, 28.7 percent of all households and 16.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.71 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread from 19.0 percent population under 18 years, 5.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 19.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 28.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 28.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 86.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 33,239, and the median income for a family was $ 42,957. Males have a median income of $ 30,592, women $ 23,039. The per capita income was $ 24,663. 9.9 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 18.0 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 11.2 percent of those 65 years.
