Patrick County, Virginia
Patrick County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 19,407 inhabitants and a population density of 16 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Stuart. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Patrick County is located in southwest Virginia, on the south by North Carolina and has an area of 1258 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Franklin County, Henry County, Carroll County and Floyd County.
Made it in 1791 from parts of the Patrick Henry County, named after the first governor of Virginia after Independence, Patrick Henry. 1790 Patrick Henry County was divided into a western part (Patrick County) and an eastern part (Henry County).
According to the census of 2000, there were 19,407 people in Patrick County. Of these, 229 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 8,141 households and 5,812 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 91.75 percent White, 6.20 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.94 percent from other races groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.87 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,141 households out of which 28.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers, 28.6 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent of all households and 11.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.81 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread from 21.7 percent population under 18 years, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 16.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.9 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 28,705, and the median income for a family was $ 36,232. Males had a median income of $ 25,391, women $ 18,711. The per capita income was $ 15,574. 9.6 percent of families and 13.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 15.4 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 18.0 percent of the population aged 65 years.
